Paul Gene Nelson Gandy

I have fought my weight my entire life. I started my very first diet when I was only in the 3rd grade. From the time I was an adult at 18 until I had my surgery at 31 there was not a single Monday morning in the 13 years that I did not start a new or recommit to my current diet. That was 676 failed attempts to lose my weight and be thin! Over the 13 years I did manage to lose 50+ pounds about 5 times, yet gained it back plus more each time. I tried everything from Atkins, working out, low-calorie, low-fat, Jenny Craig, Quick Weight Loss Centers, The Hollywood Diet. I even tried the Dolly Parton diet (don’t ask) and then graduated to over-the-counter and eventually prescription medication. Nothing seemed to work long term for me despite my deepest efforts.

During my 20’s I managed to stay around 180 pounds, swearing that I would never cross the 200 mark. Then between my 29th and 30th birthday I gained 50 more pounds and which began several years of maintaining my weight in the 230’s. Despite having always been an extremely extraverted person, I had quit socializing with people and isolated myself out of shame for the next two years. I would just come home sit on the couch, watch TV, and eat. That was it, that was my life.

Then on my 31st birthday I was at home, alone of course, and went to sit down on the floor to pick out a movie to watch while waiting on my large pizza to arrive; and for the first time in my life I could NOT sit down on the floor with my legs crossed. The bulge in my abdomen had gotten so big that it would not allow me to cross my legs in that way. Even though I was there alone, I was embarrassed, ashamed, and realized right then that I had to make a change, or die.

So I did some research and found out about the Lap-Band , had the surgery, and in just under a year I lost a little over 100 pounds, and have a whole new life. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. One thousand times over. It is the single best decision I have ever made for myself. I have more confidence, pride, and energy than I ever dreamed. It is not that I became a new person, I just finally found the real me thanks to the Lap-Band®.

Sincerely,

Paul Gene Nelson Gandy
