GASTRIC BYPASS

Also known as Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery uses a combination of restriction and malabsorption. During the procedure, the surgeon reduces the size of your stomach then attaches a Y shaped section of the small intestine to the bottom of the pouch. The food you eat bypasses most of the small intestine, which means you absorb fewer calories and nutrients. The smaller stomach pouch causes patients to feel fuller sooner and eat less food.

People who have had Gastric Bypass generally lose weight very quickly, but begin to gain back some of the lost weight over time as the stomach naturally enlarges itself if you continually overeat.  The average Bypass patient will lose 61.6 percent of their excess weight.  While studies have shown long term health benefits from the gastric bypass, such as resolving type 2 diabetes, lowering blood pressure and lowering high cholesterol; bypass patients deal with side effects from poor food absorption, and increased surgical risk. In this surgery, the intestines are cut several places and must heal properly.  For some morbidly obese patients, this healing is difficult to achieve.  Bypass patients also often have a side effect know as dumping in which all the food is passed through the intestines very quickly after eating. Dumping Syndrome induces other negative symptoms such as vomiting, sweating, feeling faint or weak. This leads to lifestyles problems for those affected by dumping syndrome.  In addition,  once the intestines are re-routed, they are difficult to x-ray or image with other  imaging techniques making diagnosis of other common gastric problems difficult. This procedure requires a hospital stay and is not performed by TLCEdge.

BILIOPANCREATIC DIVERSION WITH DUODENAL SWITCH

This procedure is similar to Bypass, but the intestines are re-routed in a different way. The people who have had BPDDS procedure typically lose about 70% of their excess weight. The surgical risks and recovery time are similar to Bypass, but the incidence of life time nutritional supplements is far greater, and malabsorption is present in a greater degree. TLCEdge does not perform BPDDS.
