What BMI Means

BMI, short for Body Mass Index, is a quick way to determine how overweight you are and if you might be a candidate for Weight Loss Surgery.

Take the number for your BMI calculated on the previous page and refer to the chart below.

bmi graphic

Underweight = <18.5

Normal weight = 18.5 - 24.9

Overweight = 25 - 29.9

Obesity = 30 - 34.9

Severe Obesity = 35 - 39.9

Morbid Obesity = >40

You may qualify for the Weight Loss Surgery if you have a BMI of 30 along with any of the co-morbidities that accompany excess weight; such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia or diabetes. Sometimes health insurance companies limit their benefits to people who fall into the morbid obesity range of BMI 35 and over, but your qualification for surgery is an individual process between you and your healthcare professional. The best way to determine if you qualify for LAP-BAND®, REALIZE TM Gastric Band, Gastric Sleeve, or Gastric Bypass,is to speak with one of our TLCEdge Care Coordinators about your personal situation.

Below is a BMI chart that will also help you to determine where you fall.
