What BMI Means

BMI is a quick way to determine your degree of overweight and if you might be a candidate for Weight Loss Surgery.

Take the number for your BMI calculated on the previous page and refer to the chart below.

Underweight = <18.5

Normal weight = 18.5 - 24.9

Overweight = 25 - 29.9

Obesity = 30 - 34.9

Severe Obesity = 35 - 39.9

Morbid Obesity = >40

Generally a person who falls into the morbid obesity range with a BMI over 35 is a candidate for Lap-Band® Surgery. Doctors also use co-morbidities such as hypertension, hyperlipidema and diabeties to determine if a Lap-Band is indicated for persons who fall between 30 and 35 BMI.
